With fall now officially upon us, it means that it’s now time to put away your summer shorts and sandals and start reaching for your knitted scarves and warm coats. It also means that the fragrant scent of fireplaces will be filling the air, the leaves will be starting to take on their new golden-amber hues, and you’ll be able to find the ever-ubiquitous pumpkin spice flavor in just about everything, from candles to yummy coffee drinks, too. There’s something incredibly cozy about this season, and seeing the weather shift from almost unbearably hot to just right signals arguably one of the best times of the year.
While the other three seasons have staked their claim on their own fun activities, though, there’s just something really special about autumn that makes it stand apart from the others. The first hint of the crisp chill in the air and changing leaves more than attest to its wonder, as well. Between going apple picking with your family to rooting for your favorite sports team, there’s no shortage of fun and exciting things that you can do during the autumn. If you’ve been thinking about what you’d like to do to celebrate this fall season, then here are a handful of our favorite autumn activities that you seriously don’t want to miss.
Explore a Pumpkin Patch
What is it about pumpkins that seem so synonymous with the fall season? As soon as the calendar flips over to September, it’s almost like you can find them everywhere — and for good reason, too! The spicy flavors associated with them (cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, we’re looking at you!) are just one of the many things we love about the orange gourd. Of course, you could just buy one at the grocery store, but why not get your own at a local pumpkin patch, instead? Grab your family and be sure to take your time to select the best one. Jack o’ lanterns, delicious pies, and even roasted pumpkin seeds are in your future.
Watch the Leaves Change
One of the most amazing things about the fall season is getting to witness all of the foliage change into vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange. While you’ll be sure to catch glimpses of it during your morning commute or when you run errands, taking a drive through the countryside to admire firsthand it is oh-so-much more special. To really make the most of your day, why not pack yourself a picnic lunch before you head out? Once you find a spot that is bursting with bright colors, simply pull over and enjoy a hearty meal of hot apple cider and sandwiches and allow yourself to be just immersed in its splendor.
Cheer for Your Favorite Team
Is there anything else that just screams the fall season quite like football? Even if you’re not the biggest fan of pumpkins and beautiful leaves, you can’t deny the fact that football season is one of the more exciting aspects of autumn. Of course, you don’t have to be the biggest lover of sports to be able to partake in the festivities — but it definitely makes it more fun! What better way to show your devotion to your home team than going to a tailgate party? Simply grill up a few burgers, enjoy a cold drink or two, then head into the stadium for the homecoming game. The sheer energy and enthusiasm of the other fans will be more than enough to help rile you up for the big game!
Go Pick Some Apples
Apple pie. Apple cider. Apple donuts. Is there any recipe out there that apples don’t improve upon? We didn’t think so, and the only thing better than indulging in these fall treats is getting to pick your own. Simply hop into the car and take the drive down to your nearest U-pick orchard to get in on the fun. There, you’ll be able to take in all the many different varieties of apples that are available — such as the iconic Granny Smith to the newer varieties, like the Honeycrisp — and take a big bite of it, freshly picked right off the tree. Don’t worry about picking too many, either, as delicious recipes such as apple butter and apple fritters are absolutely calling your name.
Get a Little Bit Spooky
Of course, fall is pretty much the best time for fans of the spooky, weird, and even a little bit off-beat. If you’re a horror movie buff, you don’t shy away from jump scares, and the idea of going to a haunted house is more your thing, then you’re going to love all of the activities you can enjoy this fall that’ll get your heart racing. Be sure to ask around to see if there are any public haunted houses in your neighborhood, as most of them will be open to guests all the way through October. If you rather stay in, though, why not queue up your favorite horror-movie trilogy and grab a seat on the couch? Your kids can get in on the fun, too, with family-friendly films like Hocus Pocus and Casper.
There’s really no excuse for being bored during the fall season. Whether you decide to go on a leisurely drive to take in the changing leaves or you simply want to stay home and sip some hot apple cider while watching a marathon of your favorite scary movies, you’ll be sure to find something this fall that suits your fancy — and totally gives you the opportunity to make the most out of this wonderful season!
